Early Life
Tapan Kumar Deka was born on February 25, 1963, in Sarthebari in Assam’s Barpeta district. He was brought up in Tezpur, Assam, and began his early education there before proceeding to higher studies in Guwahati.
Education
Deka studied at Cotton College in Guwahati, where he served as Secretary of the Debate Department of the Cotton Students’ Union. He went on to earn a Master’s degree in Physics from the University of Delhi.
Career
Before joining the civil services, Deka was a prominent leader of the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) and an active participant in the Assam Movement (1979–1985). He cleared the Indian Police Service examination on his first attempt and joined the 1988 batch, allotted to the Himachal Pradesh cadre. He has spent the bulk of his career with the Intelligence Bureau, where he headed the operations wing for over two decades and formally served as Deputy Director, Joint Director, Additional Director and Special Director.
